The Minnesota Wild hope to make Marian Gaborik an offer he won't refuse. Their first step was a visit to Slovakia for a face-to-face meeting with their franchise player. President and general manager Doug Risebrough and assistant GM for hockey operations Tom Lynn traveled to Gaborik's home in Trencin last week, armed with data and ready to listen.

Penguins D Whitney out 3-5 months (AP)

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ryan Whitney will be out three to five months following surgery to correct a chronic problem with his left foot. The team didn't describe the nature of the problem in a statement released Saturday. Whitney told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review his left foot is misaligned and that attempts to correct it with orthopedic inserts in his skates didn't work.

The Los Angeles Kings agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract with defenseman Drew Doughty, the second overall pick in the 2008 draft. The 18-year-old Doughty had 13 goals and 37 assists in 58 regular-season games for Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League last season. The 6-foot, 219-pounder had three goals and six assists in 10 playoff games.

The Chicago Blackhawks signed Pascal Pelletier to a one-year contract Friday. The 25-year-old center came to the Blackhawks from the Boston Bruins in a July 24 trade for center Martin St. Pierre. Pelletier played in six games last season with Boston. He scored 71 goals in 206 regular-season games with Providence of the AHL between 2005-08.

Gilmour joins AHL team's coaching staff (AP)

Former NHL star Doug Gilmour joined the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies as an assistant coach Thursday after spending the past two seasons working as an adviser to the parent Maple Leafs. Former Habs D Hill signs with Swiss team (AP)

NHL veteran Sean Hill, who helped the Montreal Canadiens win the 1993 Stanley Cup, signed a one-year contract to play for the Swiss club Biel. Biel said Thursday that Hill will play the upcoming season with the club, which finished first in Switzerland's second division last season and was promoted to the top league through the playoffs.

McCrimmon spent four seasons as an assistant in Atlanta after previous stints with Calgary and the New York Islanders. The Nashville Predators have signed center Jerred Smithson to a two-year, $1.4 million contract extension through 2011. The deal announced Thursday will pay the 29-year-old forward $725,000 in 2009-10 and $750,000 in 2010-11. Smithson, a free agent signed by Nashville in 2004, has 45 points in 241 games since making his NHL debut with Los Angeles in 2002.

The son of Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy has been charged with assaulting a rival during a Major Junior Hockey League playoff game last March. Quebec Remparts goaltender Jonathan Roy, 19, faces one count of assault against Chicoutimi Sagueneens goalie Bobby Nadeau. The single charge was filed Thursday in Saguenay, where the brawl occurred.
